Moore Webb was born in West Row in 1880 (Mildenhall Q3-1880 4A:601), son of Thomas and Anna WEBB (née MOORE). 1881 census...Aged 9 months, he was in West Row with his father Thomas WEBB [32] farm labourer; his mother Anna [29]; brothers John [8] and James [3]; sisters Rachel [9] and Emma [5]. All were born in West Row. 1891 census...None of the family have yet been found in this census. His mother died in ? and his father married Catherine WEBB in 1896 1901 census...Aged 20, a horsekeeper, he was at Fodder Fen Drove, West Row with his father (now farm foreman, and stepmother Catherine [51] born Mildenhall. In 1904 he married West Row born Bertha THOMPSON [6-5-1884]. 1911 census...Aged 30, farm manager, he was at Hurdle Drove, West Row with his wife Bertha [27] born West Row, and their two sons, Thomas Edmund [8-10-1904] and Adolphus [27-2-1908], both born in West Row. They went on to have 2 more children, Evelyn Maud [30-7-1911] and Albert [3-11-1914]. The pension card has them at Ferry Lane Common, West Row before moving to 13 Friday Street, West Row. |

Enlisted in West Row. The war diary :- 8th Oct - sheet 57c.S.29.c. Battn at rest- bivouac in BERNAFAY WOOD Sheet 57c. SW -S.129.c. draft of 2 OR arrived. 9th Oct - Battn took over trenches form 2nd Yorks and Lancs and 1st Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. Distribution as shown on attached map. Casualties - 2 OR killed, 7 wounded. 10th Oct - Battn in trenches draft of 10 OR arrived and taken on strength Casualties 7 OR killed, 16 wounded. CWGC have 8 killed on 10th October,only one with an identified grave. The Bury Free Press of 11th November 1916 reported:- WEST ROW SOLDIER'S DEATH IN ACTION Another brave soldier from this village has fallen in war, in the person of Prvt.Moore Webb, of the 9th Batt. Suffolk Regt., who has been officially reported as killed in action on 18th October. Prvt Moore Webb was one of those who enlisted in Kitchener's Army at a recruiting meeting in September 1914. He was wounded and invalided home in June last, but returned to his regiment on August 7th, and went to the Front a fortnight later, only to meet the fate above recorded. Mrs Moore Webb received the sad news from the War Office on Saturday last. We hop to reproduce the photograph of the deceased soldier in our next issue
